Don't Forget Seniors

Many of our client's come to us asking to use social media to "reach a younger crowd." And while we all know teenagers and 20-somethings who spend their day on their smartphone, we are perhaps neglecting a growing group of social media users - American Senior Citizens.

A recent study by the Pew Research Center found that 46 percent of senior citizen (over 65) Internet users access Facebook and other social networks.

One of the highlights of the study, for us, was this finding: "Once seniors join the online world, digital technology often becomes an integral part of their daily lives."

"Two different groups of older Americans emerge. The first group (which leans toward younger, more highly educated, or more affluent seniors) has relatively substantial technology assets, and also has a positive view toward the benefits of online platforms. The other (which tends to be older and less affluent, often with significant challenges with health or disability) is largely disconnected from the world of digital tools and services, both physically and psychologically.

As the Internet plays an increasingly central role in connecting Americans of all ages to news and information, government services, health resources, and opportunities for social support, these divisions are noteworthy — particularly for the many organizations and individual caregivers who serve the older adult population."

If you're building a website, if you're planning to promote your business, product or organization online or via social media, don't neglect the senior group. Many senior adults have the resources and liquidity to be your biggest supporter.
